I've struggled to break a few bad money and health habits over the past couple of years that stemmed primarily from learned childhood patterns and were highly emotional and maladaptive coping responses.
What really helped me to finally get past them was to focus less on breaking the habit and instead fixate on improving each element of the system that created that habit just a tiny bit every week, month, etc. Shifting my focus toward one of systematic incrementalism allowed me to gradually adopt better habits without feeling like I was pulling teeth to do it.
