Over the last year and change, my social media has been absolutely flooded with seemingly everyone and their mother urging their following to #breakintotech by learning data analytics. But rarely do these creators stop to mention any of the less sexy to downright crazy-making aspects of the job. So as a data analyst of almost five years, I’m about to break it down.

And don’t get me wrong. I love my job. It’s challenging, I get to work with smart people, and I’m able to make a big impact on the business. But before you make the pivot, here are six potential cons to consider.

#1. Difficult Clients

Contrary to popular belief, you’ll spend lots of time working as a data analyst with other people. And in order to bring a successful project to fruition, you’ll be soliciting a lot of 1:1 feedback from your clients or stakeholders. And when they’re unappreciative of the effort that you’ve just put in to make their request a reality or downright hostile, that can make even the most passionate analyst question their career choices.

Fortunately, landing at the right organization can limit this major drawback to the job. Avoid the “what have you done for me lately?” cultures, ask the hiring manager…
