I think this is an awesome approach, especially since it's often not as simple as leaving the company for greener pastures.
Oftentimes the advice doled out following a failed promotion attempt is to leave, but with a family that's far less accessible than it would be right out of college.
My only caveat is that this approach can be weaponized against those in toxic work environments. In those instances, they are most likely not the problem and should plan to leave.
